Today, Father Francis Su celebrates the Golden Jubilee, the 50th anniversary of his priesthood at This Holy City of God, Naju Shrine today!
He was born on July 21, 1943, in Sibu, Malaysia, to his Chinese father Peter Su and Chinese mother Lucy Wong, as the fourth of eleven children.
Although his father, a devout Catholic, aspired to the priesthood, and his mother wished to become a nun, they followed the divine providence and came together to establish a holy family. Both deeply faithful, they devotedly led their children in evening prayers and the Rosary every night, aspiring to consecrate all eleven children to the Lord.
Among the children raised in such a holy family, three of them became ordained priests. The eldest, Dominic Su, who served as the former diocesan bishop of Sibu in Malaysia, the second being Father Francis Su, and the third, Philip Su, who now rests in heaven.
Father Su was ordained on April 15, 1974, after completing his studies at a Catholic seminary. Throughout his ministry in the Diocese of Sibu, he tirelessly sought out any places to administer the sacraments, even venturing into jungle-like remote areas to serve the faithful in need. Additionally, he was assigned to multiple parishes across Malaysia, overseeing more than five parishes, proclaiming the Gospel of the Lord, and wholeheartedly dedicating himself to fostering the spiritual lives of His flock.
He demonstrated a fervent dedication by mastering the unique dialects of various regions across Malaysia, adapting Mass celebrations to the local languages accordingly. During his participation in the World Eucharistic Conference, he heard about the apparitions of Our Lady of Naju and, encouraged by the faithful, decided to join the pilgrimage to Naju. In May 1995, he embarked on his first pilgrimage to Naju.
In Naju, when Fr. Su prayed while holding the hands of the Blessed Mother's statue weeping Tears and Tears of Blood, Mama Julia approached and joined in prayer, placing her hand over him. Father seemed to feel the pulse of the Blessed Mother and was deeply moved. It seemed as though his heart was melting. He shared that he felt the maternal love of the Blessed Mother for the first time. Overwhelmed by the intensity of that love, he wept uncontrollably like a child, unable to cease his tears. Mama Julia saw the Blessed Mother embracing Father Su during this encounter.
Less than a month later, on the 10th anniversary of the Blessed Mother's First shedding of tears, Father Su made a pilgrimage to Naju again on June 30, 1995. Through Julia, he witnessed the Eucharistic miracle, and on July 1, 1995, he witnessed the descent of the seven Eucharists in the Chapel. On July 2, 1995, when Mama Julia and the volunteers had to consume the Communion with the seven Eucharists descended miraculously from Heaven in obedience with the command of the bishop of Gwangju, the Eucharist that Julia had received in the last, transformed into flesh and blood in her mouth. Father Su witnessed this miracle.
Father Su witnessed the Eucharistic miracle on July 1, 1996. Also, during the Eucharistic miracle on September 17, 1996, when Mama Julia was officially invited to the Diocese of Sibu in Malaysia, Father Su witnessed the Eucharist transform into Flesh and Blood in Julia's mouth at the Cathedral of the Episcopal Cathedral.
Bishop Dominic Su also witnessed this and approved it as the Eucharistic miracle that occurred in the Diocese of Sibu, Malaysia. Additionally, on October 19, 1996, during the Mass presided over by Father Su at the Naju parish on the anniversary of the Blessed Mother's shedding of Tears, he witnessed the miracle of the Eucharist transforming into the visible Flesh and Blood of Jesus.
In total, he witnessed six Eucharistic miracles. In 1997, he accompanied Mama Julia wherever she was invited abroad, including Guam, Saipan, Los Angeles in the United States, Hong Kong, and Macau. Together with Mama Julia, he spread messages of love and presided over Masses, becoming numerous witnesses to miraculous occurrences.
In 2009, Father Su, aspiring to a life of penance and reparation, joined a strict cloistered religious order in the Philippines. Despite joining the order at a later stage in life, he humbly obeyed his superiors who were much younger than him, learning the virtue of humility.
During Julia's prayers, the Blessed Mother revealed to her the life-threatening serious health condition of Fr. Su, so weakened due to his strict fasting and penance. Through Julia's prayers, the Blessed Mother called Father Su to Naju, and he also felt a calling within his heart. Longing for Naju during his year and a half in the cloistered religious order, Father Su came to Naju in November 2010 for a month-long retreat to discern his vocation.
On the first day of his retreat, Father Su met Mama Julia with Father Chang. As soon as Mama Julia finished saying, "Your religious life in the Philippines was a preparation for coming to Naju," the Blessed Mother immediately bestowed her Fragrant Oil. Father Chang remarked, "It seems like the Blessed Mother is welcoming you, Father!"
Around the end of the retreat on December 7th, Father Su accompanied Mama Julia on her journey of preparatory prayers for the prayer meeting commemorating the enthronement of the Blessed Mother’s statue in the chapel on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th. While praying at Calvary Hill, Fragrant Oil of the Blessed Mother descended on Father Su's jacket abundantly. Furthermore, as Father Su was wearing the chasuble to preside over Mass that day, the Golden Color Fragrant Oil descended upon his chasuble. Father Su witnessed it with his own eyes.
On that day, through Julia, the Blessed Mother gave a message mentioning 'the calling of Fr. Su to Naju’. Responding with an immediate "Amen" to the Blessed Mother's words, Father Su, on the Feast of the Annunciation on March 25, 2011, tidied up his affairs in the Philippines and Malaysia and came to Naju.
During his 13 years residing in Naju, Father Su has been particularly engaged in guiding pilgrims from over 50 countries annually, spreading the messages of love and the Five Spiritualities. He has also traveled to the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, and across Oceania to New Zealand, spreading the Messages of Love from Our Lady of Naju and promoting the Five Spiritualities, encouraging pilgrimage to Naju. His significant role has contributed to the global recognition of Naju as a sacred site. However, this brought anger from the devils, and they launched attacks against the mission of Father Su.
The devils sought to eliminate Father Su, harm Mama Julia, and destroy the Precious Signs of the Blessed Mother’s Chapel, leading to the fire at the Chapel on March 22, 2015. While the flames were blazing, Father Su was sleeping on the second floor of the Chapel. Upon hearing the news of the fire, Mama Julia, in tears, fervently pleaded, "Even if everything is lost, Father Su must be saved. Please keep him safe!"
After seeing the earnest, tearful plea of the little soul, the Blessed Mother intervened to protect Father Su, who was sleeping amidst the flames, and enabling him to escape unharmed in a dramatic manner.
Furthermore, on October 22, 2017, during a retreat in Daejeon, Father Su, in his homily, reassured, "Do not fear coming to Naju," and referenced the Eucharistic miracle occurred through Julia and witnessed by Pope John Paul II. While Fr. Su was speaking in his own voice, the figure was St. Pope John Paul II. This was witnessed by Mama Julia and several people. The Saint appeared in that place, adorned in papal miter and white vestments, with the papal pastoral staff at his right side.
In the very place where Father Su was proclaiming the truth of Naju and the Five Spiritualities, the Blessed Mother, angels, St. Pope John Paul ll and Saints were together with him.
Father Su always says, “I always learn so many things through Mama Julia. She is my spiritual mother.” He always lowers himself saying that he is the most unworthy and miserable great sinner, and helps Mama Julia to spread the Messages of Love from the Blessed Mother weeping Tears and Tears of Blood to people and proclaiming to numerous people that we should arm ourselves with the Five Spiritualities and practice them. He lives in gratitude for being called to serve alongside Mama Julia as a humble and little soul.
Fr. Su is the one who is filled with awe and admiration as he witnesses and learns about the little soul (Julia)'s life prepared by the Lord and the Five Spiritualties living close with Julia.
He often reflects on how blessed he is, humbly questioning his worthiness, 'Who am I, that I should hear her Confession, from such a person as Mama Julia!”
When asked by a foreign priest, "Father Su, are you a spiritual director of Mama Julia?" he responds, "Jesus Himself guides the little soul."
Fr. Su, a little soul enjoying heaven even now alongside Mama Julia in Naju, feels increasingly youthful and invigorated, saying he would live until he reaches the age of 300. He is working with Mama Julia with one heart and one mind (同心同德, in one unified strength in one heart (同心同力)! To hasten the triumph of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the Triumphant-second coming of the Lord, Jesus of Mercy in Glory, let all of us practice the Five Spiritualities and do our heroic loyalty, together with Father Su! Amen!!!
