Finding the Path of Life at the Threshold of Death after Breaking Forty Years of a Lapse of Faith: Healing of Esophageal Varices and Malignant Gastric Ulcers Inoperable due to Liver Cirrhosis 

My name is Andrew Yang Seung-pan. I didn’t always look like this because I used to be very fit and strong. I was a PE teacher for kids. I was baptized back in high school, about 40 years ago. Although I never truly forgot God, I had been away from the Church, and eventually, a car accident left me with a disability in my leg. Later, when I went to the hospital because my body felt strange, they told me my liver was in bad condition.

I realized then that medicine just wasn’t going to be enough. After all, isn’t liver cirrhosis usually a dead end since there is no known cure? On top of that, it wasn’t just my liver. 

I also suffered from a malignant gastric ulcer. Because my stomach was in such bad shape, I couldn’t digest anything properly and struggled with constant diarrhea.

Because of the cirrhosis, my blood couldn’t circulate properly, which led to esophageal varices. That’s why I started vomiting blood. I kept going to S Hospital in Daejeon for checkups and treatment, but the doctors there kept telling me to go home. 

To me, that sounded like they were telling me to go home and die. (Note: His esophagus was in such poor condition that surgery was no longer an option.) 

Since medicine didn't work and nothing else could be done, I was left with only one thing to believe in! I found myself crying out, “Heavenly Father! Mother!” just like that.

At that point, I started thinking, “I should have gone to church long ago.” From then on, I just clung to Him, begging, “Please, save me.” But back then, I didn't have a clue how to pray. I had no idea how to even say the Rosary.

I have two older sisters who came here in Naju faithfully. One of them suggested that I go to Naju with her. 

I told her, “How can I travel when I might start vomiting blood on the train at any moment?” Then she said to me, “If you die on the way, then so be it! Are you that afraid of dying?” She continued, “Life and death are not in your hands, but in God’s will.” I put my faith in her words and came to Naju.

So, whether I knew how to pray well or not, I prayed every chance I got.

Then, the bleeding from the esophageal varices completely stopped. Even the diarrhea went away. 

Recently, people kept asking me to go up and give a testimony, but I told them, “How can I give a testimony when I don’t even know for sure if I’m healed yet?” So, I made an appointment at the hospital for this past 16th.

When I had the endoscopy, the doctor said, “Oh, the varices are completely healed!” Because of my severe stomach issues, whenever I ate I would get diarrhea, so I couldn’t properly take any medication. I had malignant gastric ulcers, but since then, the diarrhea stopped and my stomach started digesting food well. After seeing this, the doctor said, “Your stomach has nearly recovered.”

I truly believe I was saved in Naju. From now on, as long as I am alive, I plan to attend the prayer meetings faithfully once every month.
