I am Maria Lee Kyung-hee, and I have received countless graces in Naju. When I was born, I had a hole in my heart and could not even cry. I was diagnosed at the hospital as unlikely to live more than a month, but after receiving the Sacrament of the Sick under my baptismal name, Maria, at six months old, I was discharged from the hospital at the age of three.


However, not long afterward, the hole in my heart gradually grew larger due to ventricular septal defect, and I underwent a major surgery that lasted eight and a half hours. In my small arms, there were twelve IV lines inserted—six on the right and six on the left. My chest was protruding in a disfigured way, and two holes were made in my abdomen with tubes inserted into them.

Two months later, a lump developed in my chest, and I complained of severe pain, but I was told there was nothing wrong. So I went another general hospital, where they excised the area where the lump had formed, and a large amount of blood and pus came out. Although I received treatment for a month, there was no improvement, and I had to undergo a second surgery. The diagnosis was osteomyelitis; my breastbone had deteriorated, the wires used to hold the bone together had come loose, and parts of three ribs had to be partially removed. Even two months after the surgery, the chest pain was so severe that I could not sleep, and I had to undergo a third surgery.

To make matters worse, the osteomyelitis spread and developed into bone marrow cancer. At that time, there were no chemotherapy drugs available, so I was given extremely strong, undiluted antibiotics—about 50 doses a day. From 3 a.m. until 9 p.m., I was on IV infusion, receiving 25 to 28 intravenous injections and 45 to 50 injections in the buttocks every day. I had to take medication every hour.

Over the course of nine months, I underwent four major surgeries, and parts of five ribs were partially removed. I even took medicine hoping that I might die quickly, but I did not die. About two months later, my breastbone began to decay again. Even the doctors could do nothing, and one day, as I was resenting God who had given me life, I came to hear about the Weeping Blessed Mother of Naju.

I asked if someone could take me there, and with the help of a neighbor, I was able to find the Blessed Mother’s house in Naju. That day, I met Mama Julia, received her prayers, and listened to her words. As I shed many tears of repentance and contrition, I came to firmly believe that Jesus and the Blessed Mother are truly alive. I came to realize that all the sins I had committed—hating my parents, siblings, and neighbors, and even resenting God— were entirely my fault. Thinking that Mama Julia was suffering because of me, I beat my breast and wept endlessly.

 I returned home filled with so much grace and joy. I found myself coming back to Naju about once a week. Before coming to Naju, I could not even drink a single drop of water, nor could I pass urine or stool. But whenever I came to Naju, Mama Julia, who was herself in great suffering, showed no sign of her pain and only wished to give everything she could.

She would personally prepare food and feed me. So while I was in Naju, I was able to eat, and my bowel movements and urination resumed naturally.

As I continued to cling to the Blessed Mother in this way, the bone marrow cancer that had tormented me so severely was, before I knew it, completely gone. Because of the powerful antibiotics, strong medications, and numerous injections, I had suffered not only from bone marrow cancer but also from complications affecting my stomach, liver, kidneys, and more—but all of these illnesses disappeared in an instant.

Even my heart disease, for which I had been told I would need to take medication for the rest of my life, was completely healed. The Lord, through Mama Julia, fully healed my broken and battered body—a sinner who had undergone seven major surgeries. Now, I live in good health without taking any medication.

It has now been 35 years since I, who once came to Naju hoping to die quickly, was healed through the grace of God, supported by the reparative sufferings Mama Julia offered in union with Christ. My heart is filled with an unceasing longing to live out the love of Christ that I experienced in Naju. Lord and Blessed Mother, You who called me to Naju in order to save me—a sinner who might have gone to hell without repentance—thank You from the bottom of my heart.
