๐ 472. Threats from Mother-in-Law's Creditors Attempting to Seize My Beauty Parlor
One day, while I was styling a customer's hair at the beauty parlor, my mother-in-law's creditors stormed in suddenly, yelling loudly as if destroying the beauty parlor. What could be the reason for this? It turned out that they had come to find my mother-in-law. Five creditors, to whom my parents-in-law stood as surety, had heard that my mother-in-law had gone to visit her eldest son in Naju. So they first came to our home in Naju after getting to know our address somehow.
However, since my mother-in-law was not present at our home, they abruptly stormed into the parlor where customers were present. It had not been long since I opened the parlor. Furious, they not only showered abusive languages against my mother-in-law but also went so far as to threaten and bluster at me! As I got bewildering what on earth was happening, confusion began to cloud my mind.
“Immediately after getting married, I have tirelessly been paying off my mother-in-law's debts until now.” Even during the engagement ceremony, my mother, who was living hand-to-mouth due to poverty, went into debt to cover all the expenses. During the wedding ceremony, she went so far as to ensure that all the money gifts from the bride's guests went to the groom in order to provide financial support to my parents-in-law.
After the wedding ended, my husband and I were staying at my in-law’s home during our honeymoon period. Then, my mother-in-law asked me to repay the debt incurred from her son’s marriage even before we returned to our home attached to the parlor. I had no money on hand as we had just gotten married. So, in order to provide her the money, I could not continue the parlor, my only means of livelihood. I chose to put it up for sale with tears.
I came down to Naju and put the parlor up for sale. However, she soon came to the parlor, urging me to quickly repay the debt. Consequently, without even receiving its true value, I had to sell my prospering parlor at a low price in a hurry to pay off the marriage debt. In the early days of our marriage, I had hoped to earn money quickly by hairdressing in the parlor while temporarily setting up a home there and then getting a separate home, but...
Furthermore, after giving her the money from the sale of the salon, we had been living a difficult life in a single room we rented with the remaining 30,000 won, the room which was attached to the main gate of the landlord’s house. Not long after that, she asked for more money. So, I implored the landlord and managed to convert the fixed-term rental deposit into a 7,000 won payment, and handed the remaining money over to my mother-in-law amidst difficult financial circumstances. I even sold all fifteen pieces of the gold I had received for my wedding in order to spend these monies for the sake of my parents-in-law and my younger siblings-in-law.
That was not all. I even covered the tuition for the education of my three younger siblings-in-law as well as the allowance that my mother-in-law demanded all the while when I was enduring illnesses. Unaware that cancer was growing, I lived a hectic life, ultimately facing death due to the terminal cancer with various complications. However, by the Love of God, I survived and began a second life. Despite being penniless, I managed to secure loans from my eldest maternal aunt and from the Credit Union to run a salon.
The very reason I started the salon was to provide money to my mother-in-law, who frequently asked for it.
However, even this event happened to me. As the past years overlapped and came to mind, I found myself momentarily stupefied. As it turned out, my mother-in-law, anticipating the creditors' visit, left her home in Gwangju, intentionally informing my fourth sister-in-law who was at home, “I am going to Naju to visit your elder sister-in-law's home."
So, when the creditors stormed into my mother-in-law’s home in Gwangju, my fourth sister-in-law, who knew nothing, repeated what she had heard: "She went to Naju." "To where in Naju?" "To my elder sister-in-law's home." Anticipating difficulties in retrieving money from my mother-in-law, they brought more creditors with them when they chose to come down to Naju. However, my mother-in-law was not there and that was why they came to my salon all together.
In this manner, the creditors rushed to my recently opened salon in droves and began shouting loudly. "We heard that Mrs. Mosan(my mother-in-law) came to Naju, so we are here. Where is she?" "Excuse me? She is not here." "Then, your husband is her eldest son, so you should repay the debt! Give me my money right now!” I was so taken aback that cold sweat began to break out.
As if they were about to pounce on me, they all spoke loudly, each with threatening words. With a trembling voice, I said, “I do not have any money right now.” To this, they replied, “Then when will you repay it?” “If you cannot pay, we will seize your property!” They continued to shout and even throw the salon items, loudly threatening me. Without knowing the situation and reason, I was rendered speechless and disoriented. However, I offered it up with Semchigo as if I had received my mother-in-law’s deep love.
