Facing the doctor who insisted there was absolutely no way to operate on Mr. Bongโs eyes, the only one I could entrust was the Lord. Knowing that the doctor was a catholic, I thought the only approach left was to appeal God to him. Entrusting everything to Him, I said as the last try: โDoctor, you believe in God, right?โ
โI do, butโฆโ
โThen you know about Godโs power, right?โ
โI knowโฆ but we are only human.โ
โYes, that is true, doctor. But even if it does not work, please entrust this to God, who makes the impossible possible and just perform the surgery. I will pray behind you.โ
โOh, maโam, you really are pitiful. But even in prayer, you have to ask for something possible. The chance of his being able to see is less than 0.01%. And in this condition, even a young person could not be helpedโso how can you ask me to operate on an 85-year-old man? Even if the surgery succeeded, how much longer could he live?โ His voice grew impatient.
I knelt. โDoctor! This man is not my relative, benefactor, or acquaintanceโhe is someone I had never known before. But this elderly man has lived for so many years, scarred and trapped in darkness. My wish is that he could see the light, even if only for a single day, before he passes away. But even if he cannot see, please at least perform the surgery. I just want to try, so there will be no regret left. If you would grant this heartfelt wish of mine, I would never forget your kindness for the rest of my life.ย
Doctor, have you not heard it was said that even the dying deserve to have their last wish granted?โ With the heart of someone petitioning God, I refused to give up. I kept on asking, seeking, and knocking.
Hearing my heartfelt plea, tears streamed down from Mr. Bongโs eyes before I knew it. The doctor, as if resigning himself, said, โOh myโฆ I have never met anyone like you in my entire life. Even oneโs own child would not go this far. What in the world is this! Your devotion is so extraordinary that I will try the surgeryโbut do not hold even 0.1% of hope that he will be able to see.โ
โYes, I understand. It is fine even if he cannot see again. Please just perform the surgery and I will pray behind you,โ I promised. Only then did the doctor set a date for the operation. As we left the hospital, Mr. Bong said through tears, โMaโam, how can I ever repay you for going through all this trouble because of me? I feel so sorry.โ
I wiped his tears and replied. โNo, please do not feel sorry, father. What will I not do for you? Do not cry. Now God will open your eyes through the surgery.โ Carrying him on my back with a joyful, light step, I offered endless thanks to the Lord.
I had pleaded never giving up, continually imploring Jesus and the Blessed Mother, and they truly helped. โOh, Lord, my Beloved! Just as You entrusted Yourself to the Father, I also entrust everything to You.โ
โO My little soul! I am staying in the very heart of you who graciously offer up boundless love, valuable sacrifice and reparation. Therefore, I will turn the impossible into the possible.โ
From the moment his surgery was decided, I continually offered the Prayers of Life: โLord, for whom nothing is impossible, just as You opened Bartholomewโs eyes, please personally open the eyes of Mr. Bong through the hands of the doctor. I believe in You. Amen!โ
